Deepening Ignatian Identity across Jesuit Works in Brussels

12 April 2026

The European Jesuit organizations based in Brussels gathered once again on 25/03 at the Chapel for Europe for an afternoon of shared reflection and exchange. Building on previous encounters, the meeting offered a space to deepen a common understanding of Jesuit identity and its expression in daily work across different missions.

The session was introduced by Dalibor Renić SJ, President of the Conference of European Provincials, who welcomed participants and highlighted the importance of remaining rooted in the Ignatian tradition while responding to contemporary challenges. He underlined how this shared identity continues to guide and connect the diverse works present in Brussels.

Gonzalo Villagrán SJ, Assistant to the President of the Conference of European Provincials, led the main input of the afternoon with a presentation on Ignatian identity and leadership. His reflection focused on how leadership within Jesuit works is not only about responsibility and coordination, but also about discernment, service, and a deep attentiveness to context and people. Drawing from the Ignatian tradition, he invited participants to consider how these elements can shape both personal and institutional approaches to leadership.

Following the presentation, participants were divided into small groups to reflect together on how Ignatian leadership is lived in their respective organizations. The exchanges created a space for sharing experiences, challenges, and concrete practices, fostering a sense of common mission and mutual learning.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Jesuit Conference of European Provincials, the Jesuit Refugee Service Europe, the Jesuit European Social Centre, Schola Europaea, and the Chapel for Europe, strengthening collaboration and reinforcing a shared commitment to serve with and for others in the European context.
