Celebrating Diversity, Embracing Dignity, Building Hope
09 May 2025

As we approach this Easter celebration, we find ourselves reflecting on the journey we share with our refugee brothers and sisters across Europe. Just as the stone was rolled away from the tomb, bringing light where there was darkness, so too are we called to remove barriers and illuminate paths of hope for those seeking safety and dignity in our communities.
This Easter, we are reminded that at the heart of our Ignatian spirituality lies a profound invitation to see God in all things and all people. As we walk alongside refugees and migrants, the challenges they face in Europe today are immense. Harsh policies, dangerous routes, and hostile rhetoric threaten the very dignity that we believe is inherent in every human being. Yet in this Easter season, we remember that for every story of suffering we witness, we also encounter countless acts of kindness, hospitality, and solidarity that speak to the human capacity for compassion and renewal.
Easter invites us to become, in Pope Francis’ words, “social poets” – those who create new systems, institutions, and patterns of relationship that honour the dignity of all. In our classrooms where diverse students learn together, in our hospitality centres where strangers become friends, and in our advocacy efforts where we amplify silenced voices, we are building a different kind of Europe: one characterised not by fear and division, but by welcome and belonging.
The Easter message rings true today as it did two thousand years ago: love has conquered death, and meaningful connection has overcome isolation. This is the good news we are called to embody and proclaim – not just in words, but in concrete actions of hospitality, advocacy, and accompaniment.
May this Easter season bring renewal to our communities, courage to our advocacy, and joy to our service. May we continue to walk together, diverse yet united, towards a future where every person finds their place in our common home.
With hope and gratitude,
