In his General Audience on August 28, 2024, Pope Francis urged the world to recognize the ongoing suffering of migrants and refugees, calling “for a renewed and deepened look, capable of embracing the faces and stories of those who cross borders in search of hope”. His powerful message serves as a reminder that we cannot turn a blind eye to the plight of those forced to flee their homes. At Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Europe, we find his words deeply resonant with our mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for those who are forcibly displaced.

Calling us to remember our shared humanity—a truth often overlooked in today’s divided world. His message on migration is a powerful reminder that the ongoing crisis faced by migrants and refugees demands our attention and compassion.

Pope Francis didn’t hold back when addressing the issue of indifference towards migrants and refugees. “Indifference is a scandal,” he said, pointing out the apathy that often greets the suffering of so many. This indifference is something we see every day. Countless people continue to risk their lives on dangerous journeys, fleeing war, persecution, and poverty in search of safety. Borders and seas have become deadly barriers. Each life lost or scarred is a tragedy that reflects our collective failure to respond with the compassion and urgency that is needed. Pope Francis’ message is clear: we cannot stand by and do nothing.

In his speech, the Pope also spoke about the moral duty of hospitality, emphasizing that “Hospitality is not just a matter of generosity; it is a moral duty.” At JRS, we see this duty as central to our work. Hospitality means more than providing a bed for the night—it means offering a place where people feel safe, valued, and respected. It means listening to their stories and standing with them in their struggles. True hospitality challenges the fear and suspicion that too often dominate discussions about migration. It urges us to see refugees not as threats, but as people with dreams, hopes, and the right to a future.

Pope Francis’ call to “build a culture of encounter” is about creating a world where people connect, understand, and support one another. At JRS, we know that building bridges instead of walls is essential. Through our work, we bring together refugees and local communities to share experiences and learn from each other. These encounters break down barriers and build trust. In a time when many are trying to keep others out, Pope Francis’ call to build bridges offers a powerful alternative—a vision of communities that are inclusive, where everyone has a place and a voice.

The Pope’s words are a call to action, urging us to go beyond mere empathy and take concrete steps to make a difference. This means challenging the systems and policies that marginalize and harm migrants and refugees. It means advocating for fair and humane treatment, ensuring that the rights and dignity of all people are respected. It means standing in solidarity with those who are suffering and working for a world where everyone is treated with the dignity they deserve.

Pope Francis’ message is a timely reminder of the importance of solidarity. Migration is one of the defining issues of our time, and our response will shape the future of our societies. At JRS Europe, we are inspired by his call to act with compassion and courage. We invite governments, institutions, and individuals to join us in rejecting indifference, embracing hospitality, and building a world where all are truly welcome.

Pope Francis’ message challenges us to look beyond the headlines and recognize the humanity in each person who seeks refuge. Together, we can build a future where every person is treated with respect and love. Together, we can make a difference.
