JRS Europe Annual Report 2016

06 July 2017

Brussels, 06 July 2017 – JRS Europe is pleased to present the Annual Report 2016. The report details work by the Regional Office in Brussels as well as 18 national JRS offices across Europe, over the course of 2016.

This year, JRS Europe’s annual report comes with a bittersweet message. On the positive side, JRS offices in 18 European countries have developed and established a wide range of projects. These have focused on the social inclusion and education of refugees through initiatives such as language classes, shared housing with local families or assistance to find a job. These initiatives have had a very positive impact – both for refugees and the communities that have welcomed them.

On the other hand, in 2016, we have also seen the dramatic decrease of arrivals caused by border restrictions and other factors that have made the journeys even more dangerous and costly for the victims of war and persecution. In the words of the JRS Europe director, Jose Ignacio García:

“The year 2016 leaves a bitter memory because when it was most needed the European response was – at the least – poor. Our report tries to show that although our governments have been disappointing, the solidarity and commitment of many men and women in Europe continues to shine brightly. Our gratitude to all of them.”

García also highlights the vital efforts of refugees and migrants: “Their efforts to find protection and to secure a better life for their families reminds us of the most basic principles of human solidarity. As Pope Francis recently recalled, “why them, and not me?” A minimum of human empathy makes us feel the strength of this call to commit ourselves to the safety and well-being of those who suffer so much.”
